In Lew of the official launch of Wizz-e.com
“great” “so fun” “coolest graphics” “more please”
Who were these words flying from you ask? Well, upon the launch we sent out emails to moms, dads, grandparents, and friends asking them to check out the sight and email back their thoughts. They had so much to say. Mostly the comments surprised us. As they told of the search for online books that were diverse enough to keep and toddler engaged and challenging enough to keep a young reader interested so they return to the site. Most had been introduced to ebooks before but not in children’s media.
They did have some questions too. Steve from Oklahoma asked “the ebook is great but how can a child learn from this media, also is it your intention to release the traditional book?” I answered “by no means.” We are partnering with parents to encourage and engage children though technology, this to which they are already well versed. Karen from New Mexico asked “what are ebooks? Is it something like kindle books?” I answered, “Yes, Karen they are somewhat like Kindle books, however our books are made for young readers. They are designed with audio and animation to enchant the reader and show then that reading can come to life.” Our books are unique and diverse enough for children ages 3-8.
We encourage you to check out WIZZ-E.COM and let us know what you think of the site!!

Having trouble getting your kids off the couch, put down those video games and pick up those paper things with words? (books) You may want to pick up this book by Scott Langteau. Once a so called “gamer” and now he is telling kids that dangers of hanging out on the couch all day. You could even use the opportunity to introduce ebooks and online books. Show them ways to download books so they can listen to them on the way to school or while walking or riding their bikes. The important thing is getting our kids to read, anyway we can. Kids are using iPods and phones anyway, why not put books on them and give them the chance to get excited by something that can be more beneficial than just the new top 10 on the charts.

If you have children or have not been living underneath a rock for the last year, you know about the small handheld gaming system made by NIntendo. The Nintendo DS Lite, a double screened gagdget that allows you to play on two screen as well as use both screens to draw, text, keep babies, horses, and pets alive or be a cheerleader, chef and the newest addition to this superb contraption, read entire novels. Classic kids stories, and adult favorites.

This device is taking ebooks to another level. One that will get them into kids hands which is the idea right? The DS works with Wifi so they can use it on the go as well as at home. Think of it as a “Kindle” Jr. only this one allows you to do so much more than read. This is just another way that technology is being used to encourage kids to read. We have said it before, if you can present the task to a child in a forum that is exciting to them, within their understanding and familiar to what they normally do they will partake in it. I mean, would you seriously pass this thing up?
Game is avail. in the UK and soon in the USA: Wired: blog

“We want Plastic Logic Reader users to have all the content that they need and want at their fingertips,” said Plastic Logic CEO Richard Archuleta. “With today’s announcements we are amassing one of the largest collections of content available for an eReader and we’re just getting started. We intend to create a large and dynamic marketplace to support the Plastic Logic Reader.”
What eReader.com and Fictionwise.com are thrilled with the new addition, as they are the forefront for ebook downloads. This will bring the ebook market into the big time. The large, clear and clean screen is most appealing those in business. It is one of those gadgets that you can’t leave the office or the house without. What iPods and MP3 players did for the CD, this will do to journals, newpapers and magazines. If you are like me, when you have a long flight you use that time to catch up on your reading. Carrying on 25 magazines could be the new fines, but the ability to keep all that gossip on one slim gadget. Fantastic.

In 1895 Charles Post began adding gadgets, pamphlets and gizmo’s to “entice” buyers to purchase his cereal. His “add-ins” would promise that Grape Nuts could cure appendicitis, make your blood redder and raise your IQ. By 1903 Post was getting $1 million in sales. Why? Because people want to get more for their money. They want to think that the money they spending is getting them more than cardboard, oats and grain. With the addition of Post’s “incentives” people felt better about spending the money they did not have on the this new idea cereal because they were getting a cure or an advantage, or something they could use after the product was gone.
Today, in 2009, we want the same thing. But who of us would buy a cereal that promised a cure for appendicitis or would raise our IQ; probably not most of us. We still want our money to go further and in this economic hardship if we can do that it’s exceptional.
The same idea is still used and is accepted in most things. However, the Publisher that’s responsible for the Harry Potter series is getting slack for selling the books as well as Harry Potter book toys through Scholastic Book Club, the club that is sold through your child classrooms. They argue that they are bribing kids to read. Scholastic’s Judy Newman says ”We’re losing kids’ interest [in reading]. We have to keep them engaged,” when speaking about selling items other than books to kids.
The idea behind the argument is kids are being desensitized to the world around them. Books are not just enough, they need to come with a toy, games, kit, doll, etc. If you have not noticed it before everything marketed to kids comes with something or has a cartoon, tv show or doll right along with it. Even kids toilet paper has a cartoon friend to remind them when enough is enough.
So is enough enough? Do we really need to give a “prize” to out kids to get them to do what they need to do to succeed? eBooks are all book. They have animation and sounds, but a doll doesn’t come with the finishing of the story. There is a sense of satisfaction that comes from finish the book, then reading the book without the sound. The child is challenged and entertained while doing something that will encourage them to read again.

The recent Tools Of Change (TOC) conference in New York bought many publishing leaders together to talk about change and demand. One particular sub conference, Smart Women Read E Books, discussed the survey results of 750 female readers. These women were asked everything from their ages to how many books they read a month to what they’d like to say to publishers.
So, what do women want?
Along with cheaper prices and more romance, women also want more e books for children! Modern life is hectic, and modern moms have to get creative to stay savvy. More and more kids have taken to reading on their parents devices and parents are looking for new ways to engage their children’s vocabulary and imagination. There is also a great interest in adapting old and beloved series to e books.
It will be very interesting to see what kind of magic of illustration and animation e books will come up with for the latest list of demands.
And yours truly will keep you posted.

Due to the overwhelming response in favor of the Kindle, an e reading device, Amazon recently introduced the Kindle 2. They have kept the same benefits of the orignal Kindle and added some new features to wow you!
So what does this mean? Most producers of electronic devices create updates and new generations of products. Apple for example introduces a newer version of their computers, iPods, and iPhones about every 8 months to a year. Why? Because change is good. Better technology, more advanced features and better products enrich a company’s relationship to both the market and the customer. Most of us have bought at least two iPods, and upgraded our phones every six months. Why? Becuase the market thrives on flux. Those who like the market and take part in it, i.e, consumers have a innate desire to experiment with novelty and value.
The great thing about the launch of the new Kindle is it proves the market for e-literature is growing. The fact that you can get a textbook when you want it for less than buying the book and download it in class because you forgot to get it a week ago, is remarkable. Buying ebooks opens a door to literature that is thought of as boring or old. If a 15 year old boy is asked to read War and Peace, he groans with dread.
But ask him to download the book and it becomes something he can understand. The use of technology encouages younger students to get involved in reading. It creates a bridge from “have to” to “want to” by virtue of its design.
You can read all about the new features on the Kindle 2 on Amazon’s site! Happy Reading!
